This week I've offered an opportunity for trigonometry students to earn extra credit by solving a challenge problem by Friday, October 12.
How long should a pendulum be for a complete swing to take 1 second?
I introduced the topic by showing this video from YouTube. Notice how each weight completes a swing in a different time, dependent on the length of the pendulum.
To earn extra credit, students need to find the solution and carefully show their work, step by step. They are welcome to come to me for guidance, but should expect the work to be challenging. I've already seen some great problem-solving strategies for this one, and anticipate several correct responses.
